B’nai B’rith International protests German bishop’s comparison of Palestinians to Holocaust victims

B’NAI B’RITH International (BBI) has written to the chairman of the German Bishops’ Conference, Cardinal Karl Lehmann, to protest a comment by Eichstaett Bishop Gregor Maria Hanke. While participating in a Conference mission to Israel and the Palestinian territories, Hanke reportedly suggested a comparison between the condition of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto and that of Palestinians in Ramallah.

Archbishop Cardinal Joachim Meisner of Cologne also reportedly compared Israel’s security fence, which has dramatically lessened the frequency of Palestinian suicide bombings, to the Berlin Wall. Several group participants subsequently made efforts to clarify their remarks, and Lehmann issued a statement reiterating the singular nature of the Holocaust as well as Israel’s right to self-defense.
