United States presidential election, 2008: the Republican candidates debate

In the Republican Party debate yesterday in Iowa, John McCain said he will continue to support the surge if Iraq does not meet the benchmarks by General Petraeus‘ September progress report.

When Rudy Giuliani was asked if there was any difference between himself and John McCain, he responded by criticizing McCain for not using the phrase “Islamic terrorist” in any of the debates. Mitt Romney said he, McCain, and Giuliani are “pretty much in the same place” on Iraq.

Giuliani also criticized Barack Obama‘s recent speech advocating the use of military force in Pakistan. “We don’t go out to say to a nation that’s working with us that we intend to go in there and bring on a unilateral attack,” he said.
