Bush, Karzai debate Iran


U.S. President George W. Bush and Afghan President Hamid Karzai differed over Iran‘s role in Afghanistan during talks at Camp David.

In a joint press conference Bush picked at Karzai’s characterization of Iran as “a helper and a solution” in Afghanistan , saying he “would be very cautious about whether or not the Iranian influence there in Afghanistan is a positive force.” Karzai’s comments came in a prior interview with CNN.

U.S. officials have accused Tehran of allowing weapons to slip across the Iranian-Afghan border.

Beyond the Iran issue, however, the leaders found much to agree upon at the summit, particularly with respect to fighting terrorism in Afghanistan. The talks came as Taliban officials said Bush and Karzai were responsible for the fate of 23 South Korean hostages, two of whom have already been executed.
