Pakistan in pre-campaign clampdown

The Financial Times says Pakistan is undergoing a sweeping security clampdown in advance of October 6 presidential elections.

The move comes as Pakistan’s current President Pervez Musharraf officially filed for nomination. The Pakistani newspaper Dawn reports that an amicus brief filed to the Pakistani Supreme Court says the country’s penal code threatens ten years imprisonment to persons proposing or seconding Musharraf as a candidate.
