Nicolas Sarkozy’s first official visit to Moscow

French President Nicolas Sarkozy today met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sarkozy’s first official visit to Moscow.

The talks focused on international efforts to address Iran’s nuclear program, on which French officials have taken an increasingly hard line. Vladimir Putin said Iran must be pressed to make its nuclear program transparent but also reiterated that there is no proof the country intends to develop nuclear weapons.

The BBC reports Nicolas Sarkozy hailed the talks as successful, saying he bridged differences with Putin over Iran and the two presidents’ “positions moved much closer.”

The Russian news agency Interfax says Putin praised political and economic cooperation between France and Russia.
