Turkey approves Iraq raids

Turkey’s parliament overwhelmingly voted in favor of a measure that allows the country’s military to launch land raids into northern Iraq in an effort to squash out Kurdish separatists there.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly cautioned that the measure does not necessarily mean Turkey will attack, yet the measure was nonetheless seen as a blow to both the United States and Iraqi governments, each of which strongly oppose Turkish incursions into Iraqi Kurdistan.

Some analysts see the move as a “defining moment” in Turkish-American relations.
