Iran military targeted

U.S. officials signaled they will announce plans for a new program of sanctions against Iran today alongside a decision by the Bush administration to label the Quds force of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards a supporter of terrorism.

The new sanctions will target the military group to try to cut off what State Department officials called “malignant” Iranian activity in Iraq.

A senior State Department official said yesterday that there is no doubt that Iranian political leaders in Tehran are responsible for some of the Guard’s operations.

The announcement of tougher measures parallels concern over Iran’s appointment of a new nuclear envoy, Saeed Jalili, considered by some Western experts to be more hard-line than his predecessor, Ali Larijani.
