United States presidential election, 2008: Dueling over Iran

The Clinton and Obama campaigns released “dueling memos” on Iran.

Obama adviser Greg Craig warned Congress against taking any action “that might be used either to justify a U.S. attack on Iran” and said Senator Hillary Clinton’s vote for the Kyl-Lieberman amendment “does just that.”

Hillary Clinton’s response implied hypocrisy on Senator Obama’s part, citing a speech Obama gave in 2006 “making the case for why maintaining a military force in Iraq is necessary to constrain Iran’s ambitions.”

Separately, Hillary Clinton expressed support for the Bush administration’s announcement of new sanctions on Iran yesterday.

Fred Thompson has drawn fire for referring to the Iraqi insurgency as “a bunch of kids with improvised explosive devices.”
