Iraq to shut down Kurd rebels

Iraq’s government said it will “shut down” anti-Turkish rebels operating in the northern, Kurdish-controlled region of Iraq.

The announcement comes after an intense round of diplomacy among U.S., Iraqi, and Turkish officials aimed at staving off a Turkish invasion.

NPR reports on three U.S. marines that General David Petraeus dispatched on a trust-building mission to the Iraqi town of Qadisiyah, a Shiite stronghold on the route by which Iranian arms are thought to flow into Iraq.
